With two new 7- and 11-tonne forwarders added to the line-up, Caterpillar is quickly filling in any gaps in its CTL offerings. The forest supplier has already completely revamped its 6WD, 14-tonne Cat 564 and 8WD, 5-tonne 574 forwarders, including new Tier 3 173-hp engines with extra torque. Cat ACERT Tier 3 engines also power the new 4WD and 6WD 534 and 544, although these smaller machines suited for thinnings and smaller clearcuts use the 125-hp C4.4 powerplant. This engine produces 18% more torque than previous engine designs, for more power at lower rpm's, and thus better fuel efficiency. Cat has also enhanced the cab design on the two larger forwarders, including more even heating and cooling, and better instrumentation positioning. We also hear rumours of a large Cat 18- to 20-tonne forwarder coming to a forest near you by this fall.
