NSW: Five teenagers charged over detention centre rampage

Five teenagers had been charged with a string of offences after a rampage at a juvenile
justice centre on the New South Wales central coast.

Police say three 17-year-old boys and two 18-year-olds have been charged by over a riot at
the Kariong Juvenile Justice Centre, near Gosford, on March 23.

A police spokesman says they'll front Gosford Local Court today charged with malicious
damage, assault, affray, and malicious damage by fire.

Eight teenagers were allegedly involved in the rampage, smashing lights, tearing wash
basins from walls and setting a cell alight.

During the incident three inmayes were treated for smoke inhalation and a fourth was taken
to Gosford Hospital suffering a minor head injury.

The riot was the third during March at the troubled facility.





Kariong houses about 48 prisoners aged between 13 and 21.
